Healthy Snack For Mom and Dad

My wife and I rented a movie Saturday night. It was called Jumper. Pretty crazy flick about teleporting with good action.

Anyway, instead of munching on junk food or even popcorn, this is what I whipped up.

Thai Chili Spice Shrimp

It's high in protein and tastes awesome!


Thaw out a bag of frozen shrimp.

Toss in a hot pan with olive oil.

A few chopped scallions.

1 clove of garlic

A drop (I mean a drop!) of hot tai chili sauce

Juice of 1 squeezed lime

Sprinkle a mixture of spices over shrimp,

I used roasted garlic and pepper spice
parsley
salt
pepper
chili powder

Serve with appetizer toothpicks and your all set for a healthy movie snack!

Today's Workout

Well, I decided I needed a chance of pace in my workouts.

Usually after 4 weeks with the same training program I get bored both physically and mentally. Most studies show your body adapts to the same training program after 4-6 weeks. The more years you have been training the faster your body will adapt.

After spending the last few months focusing on mostly compound exercises and maximum strength I have switched things around a bit. It's a program called the Shotgun method where you do mostly compound exercises like squats, bench or deadlifts one day and then do more isolation type movements in the next workout to improve any muscle groups that you want to focus on.

I haven't done much direct arm work or calf work in the last few months so it will feel good to hit these muscles again.

Today was Day 2 or the isolation type workout:

A Standing Lateral Raises, 5 sets of 10-12 reps

B1 Standing Zottman Curls, 5 sets of 5-7 reps

B2 Decline Dumbbell Extensions, 5 sets of 5-7 reps

C Seated Calf Raises, 5 sets of 10-12 reps

I was pumped and focused during the workout and was soaked afterwards.

Good stuff. I am off to have my post-workout meal of healthy homemade chili!

Post-Workout Nutrition

Here is the second video of me showing my post-workout supplements.

30-45 mins after this I will have my regular food meal.



Remember I don't consider any of these supplements mandatory. But I highly recommend fish oil to everyone for its powerful anti-inflammatory properties .

If you want a cheap and easy recovery shake after your workout. 500 ml of chocolate milk has been shown in actual studies to enhance recovery after weight training. It has protein, carbs and little fat.

Eat Fat To Get Fit




Are you sick of steaks and burgers for your muscle building meals.?

Well, here is a great tasting quick recipe for heart healthy salmon done on the grill.

I use this all the time to cook tasty salmon in a flash. A bonus to cooking on the BBQ is you won't stink out our house!

Just make sure you get Wild Salmon instead of Farm raised salmon. The omega 3 (the good fats) profile of wild salmon is way better.

Light your outdoor BBQ grill, close the cover and heat to 350 degs.

Place a Wild Salmon Fillet on a sheet of foil wrap skin side down.

Sprinkle spices of your choice over Salmon. I like to use a Salmon seasoning made by Clubhouse.

Squeeze a drop of lemon juice over the fillet.

Fold the foil wrap into a pocket covering the fillet. Leave a little opening in the center to allow steam to exscape.

Place over INDIRECT heat. Not over the burner that is lit.

Close the cover and cook for 12-14 mins. When you can insert a fork into the fillet and its warm and flaky it should be done.

Remove from grill, let cool and slide the spatula underneath the fillet between the skin and the flesh, it should slide right off the skin.

Wet and Wild Workout

Man, I thought yesterday's workout was tough.

Well, today was even more intense! I was soaked by the end.

I really had to push myself to get through the workout.

I did cluster sets which is mini-sets where you do a few reps and take a 10 sec break in between, re-rack the weight just enough to catch your breath and you do it again 4 times before you take a normal break for 2 mins. I did this series 5 times and with Front Squats.

Then it was on to Dumbbell Step-ups for 3 sets of 8.

Also did natural glute ham raises and barbell rollouts in alternate sets.

Then I finished off with 1 leg standing bench squats. These are really challenging and should only be attempted if you have been training for awhile.

I was wiped after the front squats but kept focused and got through the workout.

Here is what I ate today to give you an idea of my current diet:

8:00am-Preworkout- Bowl of instant regular oatmeal with blueberries, half of my Biotest Surge workout shake, the other half I drink during my workout.

10:30am-Postworkout- Another Surge recovery shake withg 5 grams of creatine and 1 scoop of Greens Plus, vitamin C, E, Multivitamin, Glucosamine

11:30am- Lunch- Premade casserole of lean ground beef, ww pasta and veggies, 4 fish oil caps

2:30pm- Snack- 1 scoop of Biotest Metabolic Drive protein powder mixed with 1 cup of plain yogurt, few cashews

6:00pm-Dinner- Ground turkey meatballs, brown rice and veggies, vitamins and 4 fish oil caps

10:00pm- 1 scoop of Biotest Metabolic Drive protein powder , 1 tbsp of natural peanut butter

Gym Time For Dad

I hit the gym today for a short and intense workout.

Man, it has been warm in the gym the last few days. No my dungeon gym that I train at doesn't have AC. Just lots of raw steel that gets rusty when the weather gets humid.

I dropped my wife and baby daughter Matea off to visit my mother while I was at the gym, which is nearby.

There is always a way to schedule your workouts even if your a busy dad.

Thanks to my Dad Fitness workouts I only workout 3 days a week.

I started with my dynamic warm-up of bodyweight squats, arm circles, pushups and lunges.

Then I alternated with One Arm Dumbbell Presses and Chin-ups for my first superset.

I moved on to pushups and one-arms dumbbell rows back to back.

I finished off the workout with cable shoulder rotations for the rotator cuffs and side bridge planks for abs.

Planning to hit the gym again tomorrow morning.

Remember, No Excuses. You don't have to live in the gym to get results.

Fat Loss Tips For Dads

So here are 5 more fat loss tips for beginner & advanced readers.

1) No liquid calories (with the exception of a post-workout drink).

Get rid of all the juices, the sodas, and the sports drinks. Liquid sugar is the last thing you need when you are trying to lose fat.

You must also limit your alcohol intake - especially if you are adding mix to drinks...that is a double calorie bomb! A single "Jack and Coke" is over 200 calories (100 calories from booze and 100 calories from mix).

2) No fast food.

Do not eat at fast food restaurants. Even if you choose what you think is healthy, remember this:

Fast food restaurants are all about profit.

And in order to profit while giving you cheap, quick, and easy to prepare foods, the quality of the food ingredients will be poor - especially the protein.

Now you might have read that you can still make healthy choices at fast food restaurants. But you know what, that's just politically-correct opinion. If it's fast food, it's poor food.

Walking into a burger joint and grabbing a chicken breast on a white bread bun with a piece of old lettuce and a half-green, half-pink tomato is "barely" healthy eating.

The politically-incorrect truth is that it's going to take time and effort to eat properly. You will have to plan, shop, and prepare healthy meals. You will have to spend time cleaning, cutting, and cooking your food. That's the truth.

But believe me, it will taste so much better than fast food, and healthy eating will make you more alert. Eating fast food will make you feel terrible, and will make you want to have an afternoon nap at your desk.

Make one small improvement to your nutrition everyday for the rest of your life.

3) Eat more fruits and vegetables.

If you are eating 2 servings per day, then go up to 4 servings per day by the end of the week. And even if you think you are doing great by having 5 servings per day, you still need to double that (take 2-3 weeks to work your way up to 10 servings per day).

Stick with fiber-rich fruits and vegetables - organic if possible.

4) Eat 1oz of almonds or walnuts per day (1/2 oz in the AM, and the other half in the afternoon).

Most nuts are roasted in oils (possible source of trans fats), so stick to natural or dry-roasted nuts.

Don't panic...this small amount of nuts won't make you fat, but will fill you up and help you lose weight.

5) Be consistent with your workouts.

And make sure the workouts are efficient and effective. To make it easy for you to follow, stick with the Turbulence Training fat burning workout system.

It doesn't matter if you train in the morning before or after breakfast, or at night before or after dinner, or at 1pm on days when the moon is in line with Saturn...don't worry about the details, just train consistently.

6) BONUS TIP: Go for a walk after lunch or dinner (or anytime you eat a big meal). Research shows this will help you control your cholesterol and triglycerides, plus any movement is better than sitting around watching the TV and snacking.

I am going to keep this simple. When bench pressing, please wrap your hands all the way around the bar! I still continue to see people in the gym bench pressing with a thumb-less grip. Most people don't even know why they are doing it that way, they just picked up the habit from a fellow gym rat...and no it doesn't make the exercise more effective. It just makes it harder on your wrists and is an accident waiting to happen.

Muscle For Dads

A lot of people always ask me what I eat after my morning workout.

Well, here it is:

Pre -Workout: 1 bowl of oatmeal with blueberries and 2 scoops of Biotest Surge Recovery Drink

During Workout: I drink half of the recovery drink with breakfast and the other half during my workout

Lose Fat By Eating Pizza


If you want to lose fat and build lean muscle, you don't need to live off a diet of boiled chicken breasts and broccoli.

If your a busy dad who works hard to provide for your family, you need real food thats good for you but actually tastes good!

We had unexpected dinner guests over this evening. Someone suggested take-out pizza but I had a better idea and I made tasty wholesome homemade pizza. They all said it was the best pizza they ever had!

Pizza is by far my favorite food period. But if your slamming down take-out pizza or the store bought junk say good-bye to being a fit dad.

It always is best to stick with natural whole foods even if your eating a little higher calorie foods. Here is my healthy homemade pizza recipe. Keep the portions to 2 slices and add a side salad.

Dad Fitness Pizza

2 cups of whole wheat flour
1 cup of warm water
1 pk quick rise yeast
1 tsp olive oil
1 tsp natural honey
half tsp salt

Mix and let rise for at least 20 min.

Here is the toppings I like.

cooked extra lean ground beef or grilled chicken instead of pepperoni
red onions
mushrooms
bell peppers, green, yellow, red
hot pepper rings
sun dried tomatoes
black olives
fresh oregano

Bake for 25 mins at 425 deg.

Bottles, Bottles Everywhere

For any of you dads who supplement your diet with protein shakes and use those shaker bottles you know they get to be a pain trying to clean. Especially if you are having 2-3 shakes a day.

They have been the source of many mystery smells in our kitchen after so much use and improper cleaning. But since we had our baby daughter I have found the perfect tool for cleaning my shaker bottles as well as baby Matea's bottles.

It's the Munchkin Bottle Brush.



These bottle brushes are awesome for cleaning any narrow bottles and getting in all those creases where stuck on protein can cause some lingering odors over time. We have two bottle brushes, one for her and one for me! They also have a suction cup bottom to help it stand and a smaller nipple brush that unscrews from the handle for the smaller jobs on nipples and vent tubes thats comes with the glass Dr. Brown baby bottles.

BBQ Tips for Dad

If your like me you love firing up your backyard grill on those sunny summer days.

Heck, I even use my BBQ year around up here in northern Canada!

I just keep the snow cleared from deck with my snowblower and it's grillin and chillin time.

Nothing beats food on the grill, its tasty and if you use lean cuts of meat, chicken or fish, you will give your body the muscle building fuel to get lean and mean for summer.

Here are some tips to becoming the king of the grill:

1. Crank up the heat. Make sure you let your grill reach its maximum temperature. Light it up, close the lid and wait until the thermometer hits its max, usually around 500 degrees.

2. Grease your grill. To prevent sticking, oil your grill with some oil dabbed on a paper towel or spray your grill with pam before you light up. You don't want a mushroom cloud of flames coming from your backyard!

3. To grill the perfect steak to medium rare and get those awesome grill marks. Place steak on hot oiled grill pointing in 2 o'clock direction for 2 mins, then lift and turn to opposite angle of 10 o clock for another 2 mins. Then flip the steak and repeat the same, 2 mins, rotate, 2 more mins.

4. Don't cut into the steak to see if its done, this will let out the juices and dry out the meat. Follow these steps and your steak will cook perfectly every time.

5. Remove steak from the grill and let sit for 5 mins to allow the meat to absorb its own juices.

*Take advantage of the large cooking surface and fill it up with chicken breasts, kabobs and lean burgers so you have awesome meals for the next couple days!

Here is the BBQ I have and love it. It has burner plates which prevent flare-ups instead of charcoal or bricks. It's a Broil King, they make high quality grills.
